Ghana gains trade advantage from U.S. tariff policy, says Ambassador Palmer

The outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, shared insights on trade. She believes Ghana could benefit from the new global tariff regime by the U.S.

In an interview on Channel One TV, she discussed Ghana's export tariffs. Currently, Ghanaian exports face a 10% tariff. This rate is lower than those of other countries.

Ambassador Palmer noted that many countries face higher tariffs. For example, Bangladesh and Vietnam have tariffs of 47% and 63%. Oil and gas exports from Ghana are not subject to this tariff.

She mentioned that nearly 60 countries have tariffs above 10%. This situation gives Ghana a favorable position in international trade.

Palmer encouraged Ghana to seize this opportunity. She suggested engaging with U.S. lawmakers about the tariff framework. The current framework will expire at the end of September 2025.
