Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa – Minister for Foreign Affairs
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working hard to help 160 Ghanaians facing deportation from the United States.
Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that efforts are underway for their dignified return.
He said, “We have decided not to publicize information about them.” When they arrive, a team will welcome them and assist with integration. They will also connect returnees with their families.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the importance of respecting their dignity. He noted that they are working quietly with partners to avoid media exposure.
He shared this information during a media briefing on Thursday. This was in preparation for the launch of ECOWAS's 50th Anniversary in Accra on April 22.
As part of this celebration, Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers on April 22-23.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting returnees and aiding their reintegration into society.
This situation arises amid increased immigration enforcement in the US. Over 3,500 undocumented immigrants have been arrested since President Trump took office.
The US has around 11 million undocumented immigrants, affecting countries like Ghana due to deportation measures.
The Ministry aims to ensure a smooth transition for returnees while focusing on their dignity and well-being.
ECOWAS is a regional economic community promoting cooperation among its 15 member states in West Africa. It addresses issues like economic development, trade liberalization, infrastructure development, and peace and security.
Its goals include creating a single market, improving living standards, and fostering regional cooperation.
