Ghana grapples with AI adoption amid infrastructure, data challenges

Ghana is adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various sectors. However, challenges remain in developing local tools, protecting data, and improving digital infrastructure. One positive development is AI-powered security systems.

These systems are not typical smart security solutions. They use AI to learn, adapt, and analyze data. Benjamin, an IT specialist at Response One, noted that these systems are popular in homes and businesses. He suggested considering an intruder alarm system instead of hiring security personnel.

AI is also making strides in education. It personalizes learning experiences and streamlines processes for teachers and students. However, we must ask if we are fully utilizing its potential. "It depends on how you frame the question," said an expert. Sometimes AI references may not be suitable for academic purposes.

Globally, the impact of AI is clear. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2030, AI will create many jobs. Roles like AI specialists and software developers will be in high demand. Meanwhile, traditional jobs such as postal clerks may decline.

This shift raises questions about Ghana's workforce preparation for the future. The government's One Million Coders program aims to equip people for an AI-driven economy. Minister for Communication Sam George emphasized that "Artificial Intelligence is not the future; it is the present." He stressed the importance of reskilling and upskilling to make Ghana a hub for AI innovation.
