Ghana has no flooding problem; it suffers poor planning, lack of enforcement - Amanda Clinton

Amanda Akuokor Clinton, a legal practitioner and political analyst, spoke on JoyNews’ Newsfile. She discussed Ghana's flooding issues on Saturday, May 24.

Clinton believes poor urban planning causes persistent flooding in the country. She emphasized the need for better governance and enforcement of regulations.

“We don’t have a flooding problem in Ghana,” she stated. “What we have is a planning and enforcement problem.”

She criticized past governments for not implementing long-term solutions. According to her, lack of political will has allowed disasters to recur annually.

Her comments came after NADMO confirmed five deaths from recent floods. The flooding affected parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, May 18.

NADMO attributed the fatalities to inadequate drainage and uncontrolled building near waterways. Richard Amo Yartey, NADMO’s Director of Inspectorate, provided details about the deaths.

Three occurred in Ga East Municipality and two in Adenta. Clinton argued that this tragedy highlights the need for preventive measures in urban management.
