“Ghana is under siege” – Afenyo-Markin urges Parliament to defend democracy

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has made an urgent appeal. He urged fellow legislators to set aside partisanship. They must protect Ghana’s democratic institutions amid rising political tensions.

Afenyo-Markin spoke during a demonstration on May 5. This event was led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He described the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as a threat to constitutional order.

“Ghana is under siege,” he stated while presenting a petition. The petition was given to Clerk of Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. He called for all political parties to defend the rule of law and judicial independence.

The demonstration attracted hundreds of party supporters and civil society activists. Organizers labeled the sidelining of the Chief Justice as “unjust and unconstitutional.” Protesters marched to Parliament House with placards, demanding transparency and respect for judicial independence.

Afenyo-Markin condemned politically motivated interference in the judiciary. He warned that such actions could undermine democracy in Ghana. “We cannot allow state institutions to be undermined under accountability,” he said. He emphasized that Parliament must defend democracy.

The petition demands immediate oversight action and reversal of the Chief Justice’s suspension. It also calls for full public disclosure regarding this decision.
