Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has declared that Ghana is under siege.
He urged fellow legislators to prioritize democracy over party interests. Afenyo-Markin made these comments while presenting a petition to Parliament. He said, “This is a call to all of us, regardless of political affiliation, to defend the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.”
He criticized President John Dramani Mahama, claiming he acts like an autocrat. Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the inauguration had many military dictators and authoritarian sympathizers present.
He believes Mahama's actions show a desire to amend the Constitution for a third term. Afenyo-Markin stated that since taking office, Mahama has weaponized security services against political opponents.
He mentioned that private citizens have faced property seizures and rights violations. This behavior, he argued, is not governance but tyranny disguised as democracy.
Afenyo-Markin also noted that senior military officers have been dismissed unfairly. He expressed concern about the military losing its non-partisan reputation.
The minority leader accused Mahama of having a cynical agenda to capture the Judiciary. He claimed this explains the ongoing attacks on judicial independence.
In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga said Afenyo-Markin is spreading rumors about Mahama's intentions. Ayariga suggested Ghanaians are not discussing a potential third term for Mahama.
He added that concerns about Mahama running for a third term arose before his candidacy announcement for 2024. Some even threatened legal action to prevent him from contesting due to these fears.
