Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has made a strong appeal to lawmakers. He urged them to prioritize Ghana’s democratic institutions over party interests.
His comments were made on Monday, May 5. This was during a demonstration by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). They protested the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Afenyo-Markin described the current political situation as a threat to constitutional order. He presented a petition to Parliament, received by Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
“Ghana is under siege,” he stated. He called for unity across political lines to defend the rule of law and judicial independence.
He condemned politically motivated interference in the judiciary. He urged Parliament to ensure that democratic principles are upheld.
“We cannot allow state institutions to be undermined,” he said. “Parliament must act as the last line of defense for our democracy.”
The demonstration had strong support from party members and civil society groups. Organizers view the suspension of the Chief Justice as unjust and unconstitutional.
The submitted petition demands immediate parliamentary action and public transparency regarding the suspension.
