Mr. Elikem Kotoko is the Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission. He recently spoke about Ghana’s timber industry in Columbus, USA. This was during a meeting with investors and potential partners.
Mr. Kotoko identified a major issue in Ghana's wood export strategy. He noted that Ghana mainly exports wood in its primary form. Some wood is exported at the secondary level, but little value is added.
He compared Ghana to Vietnam, which imports wood from Ghana. Vietnam then adds value to it, generating much higher revenue than their investment.
The Deputy CEO highlighted opportunities in the sector, such as cheap boards and medium-density fiberboards (MDF). He suggested evaluating market potential by observing local furniture sources.
Kotoko stressed the importance of innovative sustainability practices and digital transformation. He proposed using QR codes instead of printed programs for public events.
He was part of a delegation visiting Columbus to meet with investors and partners for mutual benefit.
