Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law, not by arbitrary power, says Bawumia amid Wontumi’s arrest and detention

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is worried about the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was reportedly arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday. As of Wednesday, he remains in custody with unclear charges against him.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia expressed his concerns about Wontumi's detention. He noted that the charges are vague and his whereabouts are unknown.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted growing unease within the party and civil society over this situation. He stressed that justice and constitutional rights should apply to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

He stated, “In a democratic environment, no individual is above the law.” He added that no Ghanaian should be denied their constitutional rights.

Dr. Bawumia has been in contact with Wontumi’s legal team to ensure due process is followed. He praised the legal team for their professionalism in protecting Wontumi's rights.

He called for accountability from EOCO and other state bodies. “I urge EOCO to act within the law and respect Mr. Wontumi’s rights,” he said.

He concluded by emphasizing that Ghana must be governed by law, not arbitrary power. A strong Republic relies on fair and firm institutions.
