Ghana navy investigates suspected pirate attack on fishing vessel ‘Mengxin 1’

The Ghana Navy is investigating a suspected pirate attack. This incident involved the Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel Mengxin 1. It occurred in Ghanaian waters on March 27, 2025.

Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie confirmed the details. Seven armed individuals boarded the ship and fired warning shots. They confiscated crew members’ mobile phones during the attack. After three hours, they left, but three crew members went missing. The Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer are all Chinese nationals and are suspected to have been kidnapped.

The crew reported the incident after reaching closer to land. They had limited network coverage while at sea. The vessel has safely docked at Tema Fishing Harbour now. Marine Police and Naval Intelligence have started interrogations.

Authorities alerted neighboring countries through ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC). This is part of efforts to track down the attackers.

Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie assured that intelligence agencies are working hard. They aim to locate and free the missing crew members.
