Ghana needs enforceable ethics law, not just guidelines – Elvis Darko

Elvis Darko, editor of NewsCenta, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to act. He wants the long-awaited Code of Conduct for public officers passed into law.

Darko's comments came after Mahama decided not to discipline Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi is the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. A viral video showed him giving money to evangelist Nana Agradaa.

On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Darko acknowledged the President's efforts for accountability. However, he warned that these efforts may fail without enforceable laws.

He stated, “The president has shown a commitment to making appointees behave.” But he added that relying on a non-enforceable Code of Conduct could backfire.

Darko emphasized that repeated misconduct by officials could damage the administration’s image. It could also erode public trust in the government.

“If the president is not careful,” he said, “his appointees may misbehave.” He cautioned that any controversial actions taken by Mahama could risk losing public trust.

Darko urged Mahama to stop relying on non-binding codes. He called for activating the legislative process for the Conduct of Public Officers Bill. This bill has been pending at the Attorney General’s Department.

“I urge President Mahama to send this bill to Parliament,” he said. “Passing it can help restore credibility and prevent future issues.”
