The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has recorded 5,596 fire outbreaks from January to November 2024, marking a 6.43% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Chief Fire Officer Julius Kuunuor attributed the rise to harsh weather conditions, non-compliance with fire safety regulations, road traffic accidents, and electrical faults, among other causes.
During the GNFS's nine lessons and carols thanksgiving service, Kuunuor mourned the loss of 37 fire officers in the line of duty and emphasized the service's commitment to enhancing fire safety through various initiatives.
These include a national bush fire campaign, automated fire safety systems, and the construction of new fire stations.
The CFO urged the public to adopt fire safety practices, avoid fireworks, ensure proper use of candles and electrical appliances, and report emergencies promptly.
The GNFS assured preparedness to handle fire-related emergencies during the festive season.
