Ghana remains important to us ‘no matter what’ – U.S ambassador

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, highlighted Ghana's importance as an ally. This comes amid changes in U.S. international trade relations.

Recently, President Donald Trump signed executive orders imposing tariffs on many countries. Ghana is affected by a 10% levy, raising concerns about U.S.-Ghana trade relations.

In her first media engagement since the political transition in the U.S., Ambassador Palmer reassured that Ghana remains a vital partner. She stated that despite changes, the relationship with the U.S. is strong.

Palmer emphasized that the U.S. supports Ghana's economic recovery through institutions like the World Bank and IMF. She mentioned an upcoming trade mission but could not provide details yet.

The Ambassador noted that the U.S.-Ghana relationship is deeply rooted in history and culture. Bilateral trade currently amounts to approximately USD 3 billion.

President Trump's 10% tariff will take effect on April 5 under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. He stated that countries with large trade imbalances will face "individualised" tariffs before broader tariffs are enforced.

These individualised tariffs will be half of what those countries charge for their exports to the U.S.
