Nii Lantey Vanderpuye is the National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). He stated that the government’s dumsor levy requires sacrifices from Ghanaians. This is necessary to keep power on.
He warned that rejecting the levy could lead to nationwide power outages. Speaking on Channel One TV, he noted that fuel prices have dropped recently. He urged Ghanaians to contribute a cedi to maintain power supply.
Vanderpuye emphasized that enjoying lower fuel prices without preparation could lead to problems. He compared this situation to an ant preparing for winter. Without action, Ghanaians may soon face dumsor again.
President John Dramani Mahama addressed concerns about the energy sector levy. He assured that it would not increase fuel prices. Mahama described the ₵1 dumsor levy as a difficult but necessary decision.
He stressed the importance of leveraging recent currency gains for energy solutions. During a presentation at Jubilee House, he said this decision was not taken lightly. It is essential and justifiable for Ghana's energy challenges.
John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, clarified the purpose of the new levy. He stated it is not meant for paying legacy debts in the energy sector. Instead, it will help cover costs for liquid fuel.
Jinapor explained that liquid fuel costs are not included in electricity tariffs. This creates financing challenges for the government in managing energy needs.
