Ghana’s Adam Bonaa appointed Chair of UN Arms Control Forum

Dr. Adam Alhassan Adamu Bonaa has been appointed Chair of the Diversion Information Exchange Forum (DIEF). He is the Acting Executive Secretary of Ghana’s National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons. This forum operates under the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), a key UN arms control mechanism.

Ambassador Carlos Foradori confirmed his appointment in Geneva on Friday. Dr. Bonaa is the first African to lead this forum since its creation in 2020.

The DIEF provides a confidential platform for States Parties and signatories. It allows them to share information about arms diversion cases. The forum also helps coordinate enforcement efforts and responses. Its work is vital for preventing illicit arms trade and trafficking.

Dr. Bonaa's appointment highlights Ghana's role in international arms control efforts. He succeeds Col. Philippe Lejeune from France, who chaired during CSP9 and CSP10. Previous chairs include Mr. Tom Nijs from Belgium and Mr. Alejandro Alba Fernández from Mexico.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons praised this appointment as significant recognition of Dr. Bonaa’s expertise in security policy. It also reflects Ghana’s growing reputation in global peace and security matters.

Dr. Bonaa is recognized for his work in national arms control and crime prevention. His leadership aims to advance key goals of the ATT, including preventing arms diversion and promoting international cooperation.

The Commission has pledged full support for Dr. Bonaa in his new role. They see it as an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s contribution to responsible arms management globally.
