Ghana’s Dr. Delese Mimi Darko elected first Director-General of African Medicines Agency

Dr. Delese Mimi Darko from Ghana has been elected as the first Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).

The election occurred during the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Conference of State Parties. This event took place in Kigali, Rwanda, from June 2 to 4, 2025.

Dr. Darko has been the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority since 2017. She was selected as the top candidate from 149 applicants across Africa.

Her experience will help guide the AMA in its mission. The agency aims to ensure quality medical products are available throughout Africa.

The AMA was established under a treaty adopted by the African Union in 2019. It seeks to improve how state parties and regional communities regulate medical products. This will enhance access to safe and effective medicines across Africa.

With its headquarters in Kigali, the AMA will harmonize medical regulations. It also aims to combat substandard and counterfeit medical products.

Dr. Darko's election has received widespread praise. Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, congratulated her on X (formerly Twitter). He stated that Dr. Darko and Team Ghana ran an incredibly successful campaign.

He also acknowledged President Mahama for his strong support and leadership.

Dr. Darko’s appointment is a significant step for healthcare systems in Africa. It strengthens regulatory frameworks across the continent.
