Major General Anita Asmah of Ghana has been named Head of Mission and Force Commander for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), stationed between Israel and Syria.
She succeeds Nepal’s Lt-Gen Nirmal Kumar Thapa, who steps down in December.
With over 31 years of military experience, Maj-Gen Asmah is a seasoned leader. She previously served as UNDOF’s Deputy Commander (2021–2023) and held key roles in UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and Congo.
In Ghana, she has been a top educator and administrator, holding degrees in Law and Arts from the University of Ghana.
Her appointment highlights Ghana’s global peacekeeping leadership, as she takes on this critical role in maintaining stability in a region marked by conflict.
