Ghana’s Neighbor Togo Faces US Travel Ban
Togo is now facing travel restrictions from the Trump administration.
US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Wednesday. This bans citizens from 12 countries from entering the US.
Togo is one of seven countries affected by these restrictions. The other six are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
Trump stated that this move protects against foreign security threats. He said, "We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm."
According to Reuters, this directive is part of an immigration crackdown. This crackdown began at the start of Trump's second term.
The full list of banned countries includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
The additional seven countries will face partial restrictions. Trump mentioned that the list could change in the future.
The proclamation takes effect on June 9, 2025. Visas issued before this date will remain valid.
During his first term, Trump announced a ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority nations. This policy went through several changes before being upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
Former President Joe Biden repealed that ban in 2021. He called it "a stain on our national conscience."
