Ghana’s economy remains largely informal - Government Statistician - Ghanaian Times

The economy of the country is mostly informal. About 92.3% of businesses are not registered. This information comes from the Ghana 2024 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES 1) Report.

By the end of 2024, there are around 1.9 million establishments. Of these, 92.3%, or about 1.7 million, are micro-sized businesses. These operate informally and employ fewer than six people.

The IBES I report includes several volumes and an economic census. It provides detailed statistics on business growth and employment trends. It also covers sectoral distribution and builds on data from the last census in 2014.

This report spans from 2014 to 2024. It offers insights into employment levels and revenue generation. Additionally, it highlights emerging business activities like external trade and digital finance adoption, as well as sustainable practices for the environment.
