Ghana’s elections credible and peaceful – Commonwealth Observer Group

The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has praised Ghana’s 2024 general elections. They described the elections as peaceful, credible, and transparent. However, they also suggested improvements for electoral transparency and accountability.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland stated that Ghana's elections show a maturing democracy. The COG assessed the election in detail. They noted strengths and identified areas for improvement, such as transparency and inclusivity.

The observer team was led by former Botswana President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi. This 16-member group monitored the elections closely. John Dramani Mahama was elected as Ghana’s 14th president.

The report highlighted the professionalism of polling officials and security agencies. It noted that party agents contributed to a calm atmosphere during voting. This reflects Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received praise for his early concession. His actions helped maintain national stability during the transition.

The Electoral Commission (EC) was recognized for its effective measures. They added polling stations and temporary staff to reduce long queues. This streamlined the voting process significantly.

Patricia Scotland urged Ghana’s institutions to consider the group's recommendations seriously. She emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance electoral credibility.

She also commended Ghanaians for their commitment to democratic governance. This reinforces Ghana’s reputation as a stable nation in Africa.
