Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. will reopen today, May 29, 2025. This follows a temporary closure ordered by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The Embassy closed on May 26 after allegations of fund diversion. A local IT staff member reportedly moved funds from the visa section to a personal account. Minister Ablakwa shared these details in a Facebook post. He emphasized the government's commitment to fighting corruption.
In Parliament, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije praised the swift action taken. He stated, “When we see corruption... we will not condone it.” He expressed support for the minister's actions and assured that services would resume without corruption.
However, the Minority in Parliament criticized how the Minister handled the situation publicly. Led by Ranking Member Samuel A. Jinapor, they were concerned about using social media for major foreign policy announcements. Jinapor described this as a break from Ghana’s tradition of quiet diplomacy.
“We were shocked to learn of this decision through public announcements,” he said. He urged for more tactful communication with the Foreign Affairs Committee.
The Minority recognized accountability's importance but warned against public disclosures harming morale among foreign service officers. They also noted potential damage to Ghana’s international reputation and welfare of Ghanaians abroad.
The Embassy's reopening today means regular services will resume while investigations continue.
