Ghana’s most potent weapon against corruption is OSP – Kissi Agyebeng

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, believes the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is Ghana’s best tool against corruption.

He shared this view at a conference in Accra on June 6. The event was titled “Revitalising the Anti-Corruption Architecture in Africa: Ghana’s Accountability Journey.”

Mr. Agyebeng described the OSP as a unique solution for ongoing issues. It was created to fix problems with traditional anti-corruption methods.

He stated that the OSP framework is a major improvement over past approaches. It offers a stronger and legally sound structure.

“The OSP model is our best chance to fight corruption,” he said. “It addresses the weaknesses of previous methods.”

He noted that the office can start and conduct investigations independently. This marks a significant change from past institutions that lacked enforcement power.

Mr. Agyebeng explained that the OSP has full control over investigations and prosecutions. This independence ensures transparency and fairness in its work.

Importantly, he highlighted that the OSP can pursue cases in both public and private sectors. This includes politically exposed persons.

“For the first time, we are fighting corruption beyond public officers,” he said. “We are also addressing issues among private sector individuals.”
