Ghana has saved GH₵19 million by opting for a modest Independence Day celebration at Jubilee House instead of a full-scale event at Black Star Square.
President John Dramani Mahama defended the decision, citing economic challenges and the need for fiscal prudence. He revealed that last year’s event in Cape Coast cost GH₵15 million, while the previous one in Ho cost GH₵13.7 million.
A full-scale celebration this year would have cost GH₵20 million.
“In a year when we are calling on all to sacrifice, including workers who accepted a base pay adjustment below inflation, it is unconscionable to spend that amount,” Mahama stated.
He assured that reducing the event’s scale does not diminish its significance in Ghana’s history.
