Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has declared Ghana a leader in sustainable mining. He positioned the country as a model for responsible resource development in West Africa.
At the opening of the 18th West Africa Mining and Power Exhibition and Conference (WAMPEX 2025), he highlighted Ghana's strong performance. This includes investor confidence, environmental stewardship, community impact, and transparent governance. “Ghana is not just a mining destination,” he stated. “We show that responsible investment can lead to transformative development.”
A Model for Responsible Investment
Speaking to industry leaders and international stakeholders, Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah praised Ghana’s evolving extractive landscape. He noted it is supported by progressive policies and a commitment to sustainability.
In 2024, Ghana attracted about $1.2 billion in foreign direct investment in mining. The Minister credited this to the country's investor-friendly climate, stable democracy, and skilled workforce. “Our doors are open, our policies are clear,” he affirmed. He urged neighboring countries to adopt similar approaches.
From CSR to Shared Value
The Minister emphasized the government’s shift from traditional corporate social responsibility to shared value creation. Over 100 mining communities benefit directly from the Minerals Development Fund.
He stated that WAMPEX 2025 should be remembered as a turning point for sustainable deals and transformative partnerships in West Africa's mining future.
Industry Leaders Call for Bold Action
Michael Edem Akafia Esq., Chairman of the Conference and President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, called WAMPEX 2025 “timely and critical.” He urged participants to respond decisively to sustainable development needs across the continent.
He advocated for greater industry alignment to maximize socio-economic benefits for citizens in the region.
Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities
Mr. Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, delivered the welcome address. He underscored this year’s theme: “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities in West Africa.”
He noted that this theme calls on both sectors to show resilience amid global economic pressures while acting as catalysts for regional economic transformation.
WAMPEX 2025: A Continental Platform for Progress
Currently ongoing in Accra, WAMPEX 2025 serves as an international forum for leaders and investors from West Africa. It aims to explore innovations, debate sector challenges, and build partnerships that promote sustainable growth in mining and power sectors.
