Ghana to begin issuing chip-embedded passports on April 28

Ghana will issue chip-embedded passports starting Monday, April 28, 2025. This announcement comes from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The upgraded passports were first launched on December 2, 2024. They have enhanced biometric features to improve travel and security. Each passport includes a microchip that stores biometric and photographic data securely.

These new e-passports replace the current biometric passports. They meet international standards and reflect Ghana’s cultural identity. The design features iconic Adinkra symbols like Fawohodie (Freedom) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (Democracy).

During a press briefing in Accra on April 23, Mr. Ablakwa discussed the new passports. He said they are part of a broader reform agenda for passport security. The goal is to eliminate intermediaries and promote transparency in applications.

The Ministry aims to provide a seamless, citizen-centered passport service. This service will be easily accessible and free from third-party interference. The rollout is part of comprehensive reforms planned for 2025.

These reforms include 24-hour passport processing and courier delivery services. An electronic tracking system will also be introduced, along with a 30% reduction in application fees.

Chip-embedded passports are already used in many countries worldwide. They offer stronger protection against identity theft and fraud. Mr. Ablakwa called this initiative a key step toward digitizing public services in Ghana.
