Ghana to eliminate crude oil in power generation with second gas train – Mahama

Ghana plans to phase out crude oil in power generation. President John Dramani Mahama announced this goal recently. The country aims to develop a second gas processing train. This will expand domestic gas supply and improve energy efficiency.

The new gas train will provide a cleaner fuel source. President Mahama noted that there was disinvestment in the energy sector. However, new commitments are now emerging.

He stated, “We are going to build a second gas train.” This train will handle more gas from the first field. The current plant in Atuabo cannot manage the extra gas.

Crude oil has been costly and volatile for Ghana’s thermal plants. Replacing it with natural gas could ease pressure on the energy sector. High operational costs and debts to independent power producers (IPPs) have troubled the sector.

President Mahama mentioned that ENI is drilling again. Early signs suggest they may find significant oil and gas reserves. If successful, Ghana could eliminate crude oil in power generation within three to five years.

At the 2025 Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, he discussed economic recovery in Ghana. He believes this positions Ghana as an attractive destination for investment. The macro-economic environment is stable and favorable for business.

Mahama encouraged investors to partner with the government on infrastructure projects. He acknowledged past issues in the oil and gas sector but aims to improve it significantly. “I will lay a red carpet for anyone who wants to drill and pump in Ghana,” he said.
