ECOWAS-CEDEAO ECOWAS-CEDEAO

Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers next week. This meeting is scheduled for April 22-23 in Accra. It is part of the 50th Anniversary launch of the Community.

The anniversary will celebrate ECOWAS's achievements over the past fifty years. It will not just be a ceremonial event but a strategic opportunity.

All Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministers from member states will attend. They will discuss the exit of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS. A comprehensive report will be prepared for Heads of State.

The meeting follows the launch of the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee celebration on April 22. The event will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced this at a news conference. He provided updates on preparations for the anniversary launch.

The celebration is expected to start at 11:00 AM. It aims to set the tone for year-long celebrations across all member states. The theme and logo for the anniversary will be unveiled during this launch.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria will attend as chair of ECOWAS Heads of State. All heads of state from ECOWAS are expected to join in Accra. Representatives from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will also be present.

“It is a great pride that ECOWAS chose Ghana to host this event,” Mr. Ablakwa said. He added that this honor reflects Ghana’s role in Pan-Africanism and regional integration.

ECOWAS was established on May 28, 1975, to promote regional integration through policy harmonization. Its goal is to pool resources and ensure cooperation against challenges in the sub-region.
