Ghana will start issuing chip-embedded passports on April 28, 2025.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement.
These new biometric passports aim to improve security and transparency. They will also reduce the influence of middlemen in applications.
The Ministry wants to provide a seamless passport service for all Ghanaians. This initiative aims to eliminate third-party interference.
This rollout is part of broader reforms by the Ministry this year.
Other changes include 24-hour passport operations and courier delivery services. There will also be e-tracking services and a 30% reduction in application fees.
Chip-embedded passports are already used in several countries. They store biometric information securely, protecting against identity theft and fraud.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the government's commitment to digitization and reforming public services. He called this rollout a key step in modernizing Ghana’s passport system.
