Ghana to roll out chip-embedded passports from April 28 – Foreign Affairs Minister

Ghana will start issuing chip-embedded passports on April 28, 2025. This initiative aims to modernize and secure travel documentation. The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The new passport, known as an e-passport, contains a microprocessor chip. This chip securely stores the holder's biometric data and photograph. It also includes advanced security features to prevent tampering and identity theft.

During a press briefing in Accra, Ablakwa explained the benefits of the new passport format. He stated that it will improve document security and reduce middlemen in applications. The goal is to enhance overall transparency in the process.

Ablakwa called this a major step forward for Ghana’s passport system. He emphasized that these passports will meet international standards and protect citizens' identities.

This initiative is part of a broader reform agenda by the Ministry throughout the year. Other reforms include 24-hour passport application centers and home delivery services via courier. There will also be real-time tracking of applications and a 30% reduction in fees.

“These reforms focus on innovation, accessibility, efficiency, and fairness,” said Ablakwa.

With this rollout, Ghana joins many countries adopting e-passport technology for better travel security.
