Ghana's Role in West African Unity
President John Dramani Mahama stated that Ghana is ready to help unite West Africa. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation. This was during the launch of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of ECOWAS in Accra.
The event had the theme "Stronger Together for a Brighter Future." It was attended by leaders from various ECOWAS countries, including Liberian President Joseph Boakai and Togolese Prime Minister Victoire Tomegah Dogbé.
President Mahama expressed regret over Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Sahel's withdrawal from ECOWAS. He stressed that engagement should continue despite this setback. Understanding and dialogue are essential for rebuilding trust.
Since taking office, President Mahama has focused on diplomatic relations with Sahelian neighbors. Ghana appointed a special envoy to start high-level talks with the Alliance of Sahel States. He has personally led missions to foster communication and trust.
He believes unity is crucial for shared prosperity and regional stability. The current situation requires solidarity with those facing challenges in Sahelian states. Diplomacy should create conditions for peace, inclusion, and progress.
Mahama highlighted that integration through diplomacy must cover economic, social, and cultural areas. This includes harmonizing trade negotiations and facilitating free movement among people. Diplomatic efforts should always serve the needs of citizens.
He called for empowering ECOWAS institutions to act effectively and transparently. Citizens should feel connected to ECOWAS as a supportive community. Soft diplomacy—shared languages, culture, and literature—can strengthen bonds more than treaties.
He urged that this 50th anniversary be a turning point for West African diplomacy. Investment in early warning systems and youth involvement in peacebuilding is vital. Leaders should position ECOWAS as a model for integration and peaceful coexistence.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised President Mahama’s leadership in his speech read by Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. He affirmed Nigeria's commitment to collaborate with all nations within ECOWAS.
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, noted that their goal for the 50th anniversary is celebration, reflection, and recalibration of their community.
