A group of Ghanaian scholarship beneficiaries studying abroad will protest on June 4, 2025. They are responding to the government's neglect of their financial needs.
The Coalition of Ghanaian Scholars Abroad (CGSA) includes students from Russia, Algeria, Cuba, Hungary, the UK, and Morocco. They plan to demonstrate at various Ghanaian embassies worldwide.
The peaceful protest aims to demand payment for 14 months of unpaid stipends. They also seek two years' worth of book and health allowances.
“Enough is enough,” the students stated in a flyer. “Pay all arrears to us. We are suffering.”
In a joint statement, CGSA representatives from Europe, North America, and Asia expressed their concerns. They accused the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and government of failing to fulfill their financial obligations.
Despite many appeals and letters, the situation has not improved. Many affected students struggle to survive in their host countries.
Some cannot pay rent or access medical care. Others cannot afford study materials.
The statement noted that some scholars have taken menial jobs or rely on friends for help.
The all-day protest aims to highlight what they call a crisis threatening their academic progress and mental well-being.
