Born on November 18, 1963, in Dublin, Ireland, Herman was raised within a distinguished Ghanaian family renowned for their commitment to public service. His father, Lebrecht James Chinery-Hesse, was a highly respected legal draftsman, while his mother, Mary Akuokor Chinery-Hesse, broke barriers as the first woman to become an Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations.
This strong family background inspired him to pursue significant contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly through technology.
Growing up in Ghana, Chinery-Hesse spent his formative years in Jamestown, developing a deep connection to his heritage. He began his education at Ridge Church School and later attended Mfantsipim School, where his interest in technology took root.
His journey in tech innovation further solidified when he moved to the United States in 1982, attending Westlake High School and later Texas State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology.
After a brief period in the UK, Chinery-Hesse made the bold decision to return to Ghana, where he founded theSOFTtribe. Through this pioneering tech company, he sought to harness technology to empower African businesses, establishing himself as a trailblazer in the continent’s tech scene.
