Ghanaian Teen in UK Avoids Jail for Smuggling Narcotics
A Ghanaian teenager in the UK has avoided jail time. Daniella KanKam-Adu, 19, acted as a drug mule while pregnant. She smuggled 22.5 kg of narcotics worth £225,000 into the UK.
KanKam-Adu needed money for a house deposit. She was offered £250 to smuggle drugs from Canada to Newcastle Airport on March 3. Initially, she believed her luggage contained vapes.
Border Force officials quickly discovered a Class B drug in her bag. When questioned, KanKam-Adu claimed she packed her own luggage and found nothing concerning. She pleaded guilty to evading importation laws regarding narcotics.
Prosecutors accepted her plea based on her explanation. A friend suggested she could earn money by bringing vapes back to the UK without paying tax.
KanKam-Adu stated she received tickets and instructions for the trip to Toronto. She realized that the suitcase was too large and heavy for vapes. Despite this, she decided to return because she needed the money.
During her three-month remand, KanKam-Adu lost her baby.
