Ghanaians abroad to renew or acquire Gh driver’s licenses without coming home

Ghanaians Abroad Can Renew or Obtain Driver’s Licenses in Their Host Countries

The Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye, announced new plans. Ghanaians living abroad will soon be able to renew or apply for Ghanaian driver’s licenses from their host countries.

Previously, Ghanaians had to return to Ghana for this process. Some relied on relatives in Ghana to start the application before their arrival. However, Neequaye stated that this will change soon.

In a video on X, he explained that the DVLA is working on licensing departments in about 10 countries. This includes the UK and other nations like Germany, Canada, the USA, Dubai, and South Africa.

“You can do everything here,” he said. This includes license conversion, renewal, upgrades, and new applications. The fees will remain the same as in Ghana.

Neequaye mentioned they are finalizing legal frameworks with the Foreign Affairs Ministry. He did not specify which countries would be included first but confirmed that efforts are underway.

Reactions from social media users were mixed. Some expressed excitement about the initiative while others shared frustrations about delays in receiving their licenses.

One user noted they have been waiting over a year for their license. Another praised the move as helpful after losing their own license.

Overall, many see this initiative as a positive step for Ghanaians abroad seeking easier access to driver’s licenses.
