President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven Justices of the Court of Appeal. They are being considered for elevation to the Supreme Court.
This announcement has sparked reactions from political figures. Hon. Kennedy Nyarko Osei shared his thoughts on Facebook about judicial appointments.
Osei recalled past controversies over President Akufo-Addo’s judicial nominations. The NDC strongly opposed those nominations at that time.
They argued that the Supreme Court was already "packed." Some nominees were blocked from taking their roles due to these objections.
Osei believes many Ghanaians were misled into thinking voting against the NPP would help them. He advised, “Tighten your belts and get a spare heart somewhere.”
He suggested that the situation with judicial appointments will become more complex. Several judges vetted by Parliament have been blocked due to NDC objections.
Osei warned, “Ghanaians haven’t seen anything yet.” He hinted that political and judicial developments will continue to unfold.
Meanwhile, President Mahama's recent nominations include Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei and Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh. These nominations are made under Article 144(2) of Ghana's 1992 Constitution.
The nominated judges now await approval from Parliament. The presidency emphasized the importance of these appointments in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
