Ghanaians should be worried about undermining the judiciary – Ex-Deputy A.G.

Diana Asonaba Dapaah, a former Deputy Attorney General, has raised concerns. She believes the judiciary is under threat in Ghana. This situation should worry all Ghanaians.

On JoyNews’ Newsfile, she criticized how President John Mahama handled the Chief Justice's suspension. The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, was removed amid controversy.

Ms. Dapaah argued that the standard for a prima facie case is being lowered unfairly. She expressed her disapproval of this process during the program.

She stated, “Every Ghanaian must be concerned about lowering the threshold for a prima facie case.” She added that undermining the judiciary threatens democracy’s final safeguard.

Ms. Dapaah also claimed President Mahama violated Article 146 of the Constitution. She explained that this article guides suspensions of judicial figures like the Chief Justice.

The allegations against Justice Torkornoo include abuse of office and misconduct. Critics argue these accusations are vague and politically motivated.

Ms. Dapaah emphasized the need to follow due process in such cases. The suspension controversy continues to spark national debate.

Many await clarification from a five-member committee set up by the Presidency to investigate this matter.
