Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has criticized the government's taxation approach. He warned Ghanaians to prepare for more tax burdens soon.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Annoh-Dompreh accused the government of lacking transparency. He claimed they bypassed public engagement in their decision-making process.
“We are anticipating more taxes,” he stated. “It is not that they have informed us. We have intel suggesting new taxes will come within two years.”
His comments followed the urgent passage of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill. The Minority believes this move was rushed and lacked proper consultation.
Annoh-Dompreh expressed concern that this process disrespects Ghanaians and undermines parliamentary accountability.
“This is the same government that extended the sustainability levy to 2028,” he noted. “They raised it under the guise of revenue generation without introducing new taxes, but we see through it.”
The Minority plans to push back through civic engagement. They promise to take these issues directly to the people.
Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that MPs will return to their constituencies. They aim to educate citizens about the levy’s implications and gather feedback.
“Our MPs will explain this tax to their constituents,” he said. “We will collect input from Ghanaians to shape our actions.”
“We will stand in solidarity with the people of this country,” he added. “This is a slap in their face, and we won’t let it slide.”
