Ghanaians will not accept secret hearings – Osei demands live broadcast of CJ probe

Akim Swedru MP Kennedy Nyarko Osei has called for public access to the committee investigating Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

He insists that the hearings must be transparent and accessible to all Ghanaians.

“For transparency and to involve the Ghanaian people, we demand live televised hearings,” he stated. “Ghanaians will not accept secret hearings.”

His comments come just days before the five-member committee begins its public sittings on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang. It was formed after President John Dramani Mahama accepted a prima facie case against Chief Justice Torkornoo.

This decision followed consultations with the Council of State and Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

The suspended Chief Justice faces three petitions from legal professionals and civil society members. These petitions cite allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, and conflict of interest.

The Presidency announced that the committee will meet three times a week. It is expected to submit recommendations to the President at the end of its work.

This announcement came via a statement from presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
