Give Bawumia second chance in 2028 presidential elections - FOB

Friends of Bawumia is a political group supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They have asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give him another chance. They want him to lead the NPP in the 2028 elections.

A statement from Mr. Winfred Kofi Gidiglo, the National Chairman, was shared with the Ghana News Agency. The appeal is based on loyalty and strategic realism.

The statement emphasizes that history shows winning requires perseverance and consistency. It mentions that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won after multiple attempts.

In 2007, Nana Addo faced Hon. Alan Kyerematen in a tough primary battle. Despite challenges, he won again in 2010 and 2014 when Kyerematen did not run.

The statement highlights that it took Nana Addo three tries to win power. Similarly, former President John Agyekum Kufuor contested against Nana Addo twice in the 1990s.

When Nana Addo chose not to run against Kufuor in 2000, Kufuor led the NPP to victory over Prof. John Evans Atta Mills.

These examples show that no one has won the presidency on their first attempt. Winning requires resilience, unity, and trust from voters.

Currently, the party is in opposition and must manage resources wisely. Another costly internal contest could weaken them further after their loss in 2024.

Dr. Bawumia remains their best chance for future success because he has experience. He has built a national brand and strong grassroots support across various demographics.

In 2028, the opposition NDC will likely present a new candidate facing their first national test. In contrast, Dr. Bawumia has already established trust among many Ghanaians.

Choosing a fresh candidate would be risky for the NPP and could set them back significantly. The aftermath of the 2024 elections has created divisions within their ranks.

Another contentious flagbearer race could deepen these fractures further.

The statement urges unity: “Let us rebuild and present a unified front.”

It calls for choosing continuity over conflict by giving Dr. Bawumia a chance to finish his work for the party's future and Ghana's good.
