Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate. He claims that God has "exposed" those who lied about him during the Bawku crisis.
The long-standing conflict intensified weeks before the election. Opponents accused the NPP candidate, a Mamprusi, of favoring his group over the Kusasis. This led to a ban on NPP campaigning in the Kusaug Traditional Area.
Despite accusations from the NDC, violence has increased this year. Many people have died as a result of this escalation.
During an event in Bolga, Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia criticized the politicization of the crisis. He said it was unfortunate and driven by personal interests rather than peace.
"They spread lies that I supported violence," he stated. "They claimed I was buying guns for conflict."
Dr. Bawumia believes many now see through these lies. He urged that no one should politicize the Bawku issue again.
He called for unity to restore lasting peace in Bawku. "The area's peace should be our main concern," he emphasized.
"As politicians, we must avoid using chieftaincy issues for gain," he added. He expressed his desire for peace and hopes mediation efforts will succeed in bringing stability to Bawku.
