Former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has responded to Thaddeus Sory. He accuses Sory of a long campaign of personal attacks and professional disparagement.
Dame shared his response on Facebook. He defends his record as Attorney General and addresses recent allegations from Sory.
Now in private practice, Dame criticized Sory's ongoing comments about him. He called them “obsessive” and “bewildering.” He believes they do not meet the standards expected of lawyers.
Dame remarked, “Your predilection to comment on the slightest thing I do is not lost on the public. I live in your mind rent free.”
A key part of Dame’s response was defending his track record as Attorney-General. He specifically addressed Sory’s claim that he boasted about “never losing a case.”
Dame dismissed this claim as false. He said it aimed to discredit his service and mislead the public.
He referenced discussions at Bar Conferences in September 2023 and September 2024. During these events, he talked about high-profile legal defeats to show judicial independence in Ghana.
“I proudly exhibited some of my losses,” he stated. He mentioned cases like Ghana Centre for Democratic Development v Attorney-General and others.
Dame also accused the current Attorney-General of blocking scrutiny of a controversial ruling in a case involving Cassiel Ato Forson.
In a personal note, Dame recalled past litigation with Sory. He claimed he defeated Sory at both the High Court and Court of Appeal between 2007 and 2013.
“Was I the Attorney-General in those years?” he asked rhetorically, responding to Sory's doubts about his competence after taking office.
He defended his international arbitration record too. Under his leadership, Ghana won all international cases without foreign counsel, including a significant $2.2 million award in 2024.
Dame challenged what he called the "incongruous" role of Sory and Tsatsu Tsikata. Both have represented prominent NDC figures, including Speaker of Parliament John Mahama.
“If you do not find it incongruous that these lawyers are trying to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, I cannot fault you,” Dame said.
While acknowledging that lawyers must represent their clients, he noted that this principle applied during his tenure as well.
Dame expressed his desire to avoid future engagement with Sory: “This will be my only response to you… However, knowing your obsession with me, I am sure it will draw more abuse from you.”
He concluded with a pointed remark: “When Godfred Dame coughs, the whole NDC catches a cold.”
