Gold Fields Limited is facing a major operational halt. The government has refused to extend the company's Damang lease. This lease expires on April 18, 2025.
The Minerals Commission stated that Gold Fields did not follow instructions. Engaging with the Commission is necessary for lease renewal.
Isaac Tandoh, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, spoke on the Citi Breakfast Show. He revealed that Gold Fields ignored an important government directive.
Tandoh said, “When we met the minister, he emphasized that we need value for money.” He added that Gold Fields should present better proposals to the Minerals Commission.
Instead of doing this, Gold Fields wrote letters to the minister. Tandoh expressed frustration at their approach and suggested it undermined the process.
He noted, “We asked them to meet with us if they had better ideas.” However, they chose to write letters instead.
Despite this situation, Gold Fields stated it remains open to dialogue. The company aims for ongoing engagement with the government. Their goal is to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders.
