Gold Fields ignored Damang lease extension talks – Minerals Commission

Isaac Tandoh, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, made a significant announcement. He stated that Gold Fields Limited did not follow instructions to engage with the Commission. This was regarding the extension of its Damang Mining Lease, which expires on April 18, 2025.

The government has rejected Gold Fields' application for a lease extension. They have also directed the company to stop operations and leave the site when the lease ends. This situation raises concerns about the future of one of Ghana's key gold mining operations.

During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 15, 2025, Mr. Tandoh explained that Gold Fields was told to present better terms. These terms should provide more value for Ghanaians. Instead of doing this, they communicated directly with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

Tandoh said, “When we met the minister, he emphasized that we need value for money.” He added that Gold Fields should have consulted with the Minerals Commission first. However, they chose to send letters directly to the minister instead.

Gold Fields responded by stating they are still in talks with government authorities. They aim to find a solution that benefits all parties involved. The company expressed its commitment to ongoing engagement with the government for a favorable outcome for stakeholders.
