GoldBod begins licensing of gold trading service providers in Ghana

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has started licensing service providers in gold trading. This process began today, Wednesday, 23 April 2025.

In a public statement, GoldBod announced eligibility for Ghanaians aged 18 and older. Fully-owned Ghanaian companies can also apply for licenses.

Applications can be submitted online at goldbod.gov.gh or in person at their office in Accra.

The statement listed the available license categories: Aggregator license, Self-financing Aggregator license, Buyer license (Tier 1), and Buyer license (Tier 2).

Additional licenses for refining, smelting, fabrication, storage, transportation, and importation will be available starting July 2025.

GoldBod emphasized understanding the legal requirements before applying. Applicants must read and accept the terms and conditions of each license.

The Board reiterated that all foreigners must leave the local gold trading market by 30 April 2025. Violating this directive is a punishable offense under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (ACT 1140). However, foreigners can still apply to off-take gold directly from GoldBod.

All gold transactions must now use the official Bank of Ghana Reference Rate. This rate is available at bog.gov.gh.

GoldBod urged all traders to buy and sell gold at this official rate.

As it works on restructuring the sector, GoldBod seeks cooperation from all stakeholders. The Board aims to optimize national benefits through collaboration in the gold trading sector.
