Ghana is set to transform its gold sector. A new digital traceability technology will be rolled out across the supply chain.
This initiative is led by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). It aims to improve market access and increase gold value. The goal is to ensure every gram of gold is responsibly sourced and fully trackable.
Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, made this announcement at the "Mining In Motion Summit." This event took place at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on June 3, 2025.
Gyamfi spoke to a distinguished audience, including His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. He highlighted the board's rapid progress since it was established.
"By the end of this year, we will launch a digital traceability system," he said. This system will enhance market access for Ghana’s Artisanal Small-scale Mining (ASM) gold.
In the long term, every gram of gold purchased will be traceable. It will follow its journey from various custody points back to its mine of origin. The mines must be licensed and operate legally and sustainably according to Ghanaian laws.
This initiative follows GoldBod's success in formalizing Ghana's fragmented gold trading sector. Since February 2025, GoldBod has purchased and exported 41.5 tonnes of ASM gold worth about $4 billion USD.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s ASM sector. For the first time, ASM gold exports have surpassed those from large-scale mining operations.
In May 2025 alone, GoldBod purchased and exported a record 11 tonnes of ASM gold. This generated an impressive $1.172 billion USD.
The CEO credited these successes to stricter regulations and efforts against smuggling. Effective aggregation systems now collect over 90% of all ASM gold in Ghana.
These measures have improved forex liquidity and strengthened the Ghanaian Cedi. They also contribute to better living conditions for citizens.
Beyond traceability, GoldBod has a strategy to maximize ASM sector potential. President John Dramani Mahama calls them "allies of development" when properly supported.
Gyamfi invited international partners like LBMA and World Gold Council to collaborate with Ghana. He emphasized that "Ghana is ready! The GoldBod is prepared!!"
