President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Goldbod initiative has generated $2.7 billion for Ghana from January to April. He expects this revenue to increase steadily throughout the year. Mahama emphasized the Goldbod's role in reforming the gold mining industry.
Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on June 2, he said, “The Goldbod is key to my strategy for reforming the gold sector.” He noted it aims to maximize benefits for Ghanaians from gold resources.
Mahama stated, “Ghana’s gold export through PMMC and Goldbod earned $2.7 billion between January and April.” He believes this figure will grow significantly over time.
He also addressed artisanal miners, saying they are not enemies of the state. With proper training and support, they can help in development. He stressed collaboration with small-scale miners to reclaim forests and restore water purity.
Mahama mentioned tracking excavators used in illegal mining. Ghana has more excavators than all of Africa combined. The new permitting regime will require valid permits for importing excavators.
At the event, Asantehene called for action against illegal activities. He highlighted pollution of water bodies and destruction of forests as urgent issues. Regulatory failures and corruption have made these challenges harder to address.
He praised the Goldbod initiative as a creative solution for industry growth. It could attract more investment and yield higher returns. The initiative brings urgency to tackling these pressing challenges.
