Goldbod isn’t in Ghana’s interest; it’ll end up in the hands of galamseyers - Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has serious concerns about the Goldbod initiative. He warns it may benefit illegal miners, known as galamseyers, instead of serving the national interest.

On Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on May 2nd, he criticized the program. He believes it lacks safeguards against abuse and misappropriation.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated that while Goldbod's intention seems noble, reality tells a different story. He said, “This whole idea of Goldbod is not in the national interest.”

He noted that similar programs have ended up benefiting galamseyers and politically-connected individuals. Without strict regulation and oversight, this initiative could become another tool for illegal mining.

The Minority Leader also questioned the government's commitment to fighting illegal mining. He highlighted contradictions between policy announcements and actual enforcement.

“How do you say you’re combating galamsey and then roll out a scheme that could be hijacked by those harming our environment?” he asked.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called for a thorough review of the program. He emphasized the need for greater stakeholder consultation to ensure transparency and accountability.

He concluded by urging the government to prioritize long-term environmental protection over short-term financial gains.

“If we truly care about our natural resources' future, we must create sustainable policies,” he insisted. “Goldbod, in its current form, does not meet that test.”
