Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister, announced that the Gold Board will boost the Cedi's performance.
On March 19, 2025, he inaugurated the Board of Directors for the Ghana Gold Board. In a post on X, he stated that the Gold Board's activities will enhance this performance. He believes it will change how the Ghana cedi and foreign exchange behave in the future.
This shift may challenge traditional models based on old patterns. It could lead to inaccurate projections and overlook the cedi's true potential. Dr. Forson assured Ghanaians that the outlook for the cedi is strong and sustainable.
As of May 13, 2025, the Ghana cedi has performed exceptionally well. It appreciated by 16.7% against the US dollar this year. This is a significant improvement from a 13.4% depreciation in 2024. The cedi was recognized as the top-performing currency in April 2025.
This success comes from a solid policy framework with coordinated monetary and fiscal measures. The central bank and Ministry of Finance have adopted strict monetary policies and aggressive liquidity management. They have also implemented disciplined fiscal strategies focused on prudent public finance management.
Dr. Forson emphasized that this strong performance did not compromise safety nets for citizens. Foreign exchange reserves at the Bank of Ghana reached record highs in April 2025, exceeding IMF targets ahead of schedule.
He shared these remarks during his speech at the inauguration of the Gold Board’s directors: “As of May 13, 2025, the Ghana cedi has solidified its position as a standout performer among global currencies.”
