The government is addressing a food crisis affecting the Ghana Armed Forces. This crisis stems from a GH₵275 million debt to food suppliers since August 2023.
President Mahama spoke after a visit from Major General William Agyapong and other Service Chiefs. They visited the Jubilee House to pay their respects. The President mentioned that the Finance and Defence Ministers are working to settle current bills. They are also implementing measures to clear outstanding debts.
“This year, we allocated over 6.7 billion Ghana cedis to Defence,” President Mahama said. He assured that budget allocations would increase as the economy improves. This will help secure new platforms and assets for operations.
The President acknowledged the Armed Forces' total debt of about GH₵3.7 billion. He expressed confidence in modernizing and expanding the military through innovation and commitment. “We are working to fix the food crisis caused by the GH₵275 million owed,” he stated.
He highlighted the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited's role in agricultural development. The disciplined workforce of the Armed Forces can enhance national food security, he noted.
President Mahama urged the military to find innovative financing solutions for infrastructure and training improvements, especially troop accommodations. “I will support you every step of the way,” he added, mentioning plans for upgrading Asutsuare Training Camp.
He called on the Armed Forces to take action against illegal mining and maintain peace in Bawku and other areas. “Our personnel are deployed in Bawku for internal security operations,” he said, addressing ethnic disputes.
While resolving these issues through mediation and judicial intervention, he emphasized that maintaining peace is crucial. “I trust you to deliver,” he stated confidently.
The President expressed faith in the leadership of the new Chief of Defence Staff and security chiefs. “I am confident you will work tirelessly for unity, resilience, and pride,” he said. He wished them success in protecting Ghana.
