The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, announced a new initiative. This initiative aims to prevent chieftaincy disputes that often lead to conflicts.
He spoke at the coronation ceremony of Chief Togbi Ekpē Subo V and others. The event took place in the Anlo-Afiadenyigba Traditional Area.
Gunu mentioned that the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) will collaborate with the Peace Council and House of Chiefs. They aim to promote peacebuilding and development among chiefs.
He discussed plans for capacity-building programs for chiefs. An annual award scheme for the most peaceful traditional area is also in consideration.
Gunu highlighted the importance of chiefs in decision-making and development. He noted this led to creating the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
The ministry aims to foster collaboration between local government, chiefs, and religious leaders. It seeks to restore their dignity and interest in assembly dealings.
He urged chiefs to support confirming President Mahama's nominees for Municipal and District Chief Executives. This will help implement the government's agenda quickly.
Gunu encouraged residents to back government initiatives like National Sanitation Day. He emphasized its goal of promoting better sanitation and health.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to fulfilling promises made to citizens. He reminded them about abolishing the E-levy and betting tax.
Gunu called on everyone to pray for President Mahama and his administration. He assured that projects like Keta Sea Defense Project would be addressed soon.
Togbi Ekpē Subo V praised Afiadenyigba Traditional Area for peacefully installing three rulers. He urged them to continue honoring their ancestors' legacy.
As a senior obstetrician-gynecologist, he sees this installation as a fresh start for Afiadenyigba. He acknowledged challenges in health, education, and livelihoods in the area.
Togbi Ekpē Subo V promised to work with various groups to tackle these issues. He also proposed an award scheme for academic excellence among students.
This award will encourage children’s learning efforts in school each year. Details will be discussed with relevant authorities before being announced.
He requested construction of the Weta-Anlo-Afidenyigba-Havedzi road network. This project would boost local economic growth reliant on agro-businesses.
The Paramount Chief of Anlo-Afiadenyigba, Apotsle Togbi Kadzahlo Drabese IV, advised new leaders. They should follow God's guidance as they fulfill their oaths while leading their community.
He stressed equipping health facilities effectively is urgent, including providing restrooms.
Chief Togbi Tagbo from Kedzi urged new chiefs not to succumb to political pressure. He emphasized chieftaincy's role in national development is crucial.
Tagbo encouraged them to be unifying figures focused on progress within their communities. Listening to people’s needs while upholding justice is essential for lasting leadership success.
